Wow...it's hot out!  Although we enjoy the summer and all it's outdoor activities, it's important to ensure you are keeping hydrated and being cautious in the heat.  To prevent heat illness (i.e. heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke) during summer football practices, it is important to remember the following guidelines:

1) Ensure your child has plenty to drink during practice. Sports (not "energy") drinks are recommended instead of water because they replace electrolytes lost in sweat and contain carbohydrates for energy, especially for athletes who perspire heavily.

2) Allow lighter clothing for your child. Studies have shown that football uniforms cause additional heat stress by decreasing dry heat loss by 42% and tripling the resistance to heat loss through evaporation. Make sure your child's clothing under their pads is light weight.
